Types and Benefits of Different Fillings

Posted .

If you are looking to get a filling, or are simply curious about fillings, you should know that there are many different types. Each has its benefits to consider.

You could consider amalgam, which is made of silver and other metals. If you want something a little stronger and durable, this type might be for you. Note that they can last about 10 years.

Gold fillings also exist. As well as giving you a shine, gold fillings extremely durable and strong, quite a bit more so than amalgam. They can last about 15 to 20 years.

Ceramic fillings provide a little more natural look, since they can match your the color of your teeth. There is a concern that the ceramic can break, but the dentist can avoid this by making the filling bigger and therefore sturdier.

There are also resin-based choices, such as glass ionomer and composite resin. Both can last about five years or so and closely match the natural color of your teeth, though composite resin is closer. Each provides unique advantages; some of which compliment each other.

Glass ionomer can release fluoride, a mineral used in toothpastes, mouthwashes, and tap water to help strengthen your teeth against decay. Composite resin can be bonded to the tooth, giving it a boost in strength. On top of that, composite resin and glass ionomer can be combined to get both benefits.
